  • Agamenmnon’s New Pants

    Agamenmnon’s New Pants

For those who pre-ordered all three of New Age Toys’ Stormtroopers (aka G1 Seekers) the arrival of Leviathan includes replacement parts for Agamenmnon in the form of new hips and legs that resolve the unnatural hip joint in the original design.

    Comparisons

At a very quick glance you might not even notice the difference:

    (Decepticon symbol sold separately)

But the closer you look, the more obvious the changes become. A side view emphasizes the new, longer, side skirts.

    Comparison hip side view

From the back, the new hip is even more obvious, and looks more “gappy” than the original.

    Hip comparison back view

The pistol mode is even more similar at first glance.

    Installation

There are no instructions on how to install the part included in the box (at least there weren’t with mine) so I’ve detailed the steps I took below:

Separate the figure by pushing the hips backwards to slide the mushroom cap out of the torso. This will require a firm hand since the cap is held tightly in place.

Step 1 - torso mushroom peg

Remove the toes from each leg by pushing them in from the outside of the leg to slide the mushroom cap out of the calves. Just like the waist, the cap is tight and will require a bit of pressure to release.

Step 2 - foot mushroom peg

Get a PH01 screwdriver to remove the leg panels (be careful not to strip the screws!). I removed the outer panels first since they’re bulkier but the order doesn’t appear to be important. When removing the leg panels, make sure to keep the correct screw with the correct panel – the inner panel has a shorter screw.

Step 3 - screw for inner panel
Step 3 - screw for outer panel

To install the new part, reverse the previous steps:

    1. Attach the toes to each leg: line up the mushroom cap with the slot then push them out from the inside of the leg until the cap snaps into place.
    2. Use your PH01 screwdriver to attach the leg panels to the new part.
    3. Reattach the bottom half of the figure by lining up the mushroom cap at the top of the hips with the slot on the torso then pushing them forward until the cap snaps into place.

    The Transformation

The new transformation is more complicated than the original.

Here’s the original design where the hips simply folded down:

    Agamemnon's original hip tranformation

The new transformation starts with folding the legs down, similar to how the original hips worked.

    Agamemnon's new hip tranformation

Then fold in the flaps at either side of the front hip skirt panel. Here is a view of one of these panels opened in pistol mode:

New hip flap - open front view

And a view of the cap that it is meant to cover:

New hip flap - open side view

You may also notice that there is another hinge behind this one. That is the connector for the new side skirts which fold flat into the pistol grip. Here it is during the transformation:

Agamenmnon's new pants hip joint side view

And as viewed from the back:

    Agamenmnon's new pants hip joint

    The Hip Joint

The best part of this upgrade is the relocation of the hip joint.

    Here’s the original design:

    Original hip - close up
    Original hip joint

    And the new one:

    New hip close up
    Agamemnon's new hip joint

    The Waist

The biggest flaw with the new part is the sliding hip panel which does not lock into place. In many poses it drops down leaving a gap at the waist:

    New hips - waist gap

Of course, in the alternate position it gives Agamemnon visible underpants:

    Agamenmnon's new pants close up

    Update: Correct Transfomation

After posting on TFW2005 I got more information about the official transformation which includes a lot more tucking than I originally realized.

    New hips - correct transformation

Turns out that the “visible underpants” look is how it is supposed to be. You need to fold in both sides of the front hip skirt then fold up the tips of each side skirt to cover the resulting gap. This will hold the hip assembly in the correct location.

Here’s a comparison with the hips properly transformed:

    Comparison with properly transformed hips

    The Conclusion

I’m not sure that this upgrade was completely necessary but it is just as solid as the original. Each has one large flaw so you can choose your poison. Personally, I’ll keep my original version on display and save the upgraded version for any time that I need a pose that would highlight the hip joint.

According to New Age Toys, the replacement parts for the other repaints might be made available for purchase “at cost price” due to people not wanting to buy another figure just to get the part.

Due to the sheer number of accessories included with the H9 figures, there is a second insert to contain them.

Unexpectedly, Hynkel includes the same “Initial Premium” pack that Agamenmnon did.

  • New Age H7B Riddick

    New Age H7B Riddick

Riddick, aka Diaclone Onebox Cherry Vanette, has arrived at JunkionHQ!

    The Box

As is becoming the signature of New Age Toy’s Multiverse sub-line, the box features a drawing of Riddick instead of a view of the toy.

    Riddick box

Although Diaclone inspired, the box art clearly shows Shattered Glass Optimus Prime “on the comm”.

Sharp-eyed readers might notice the blue eyes instead of the red shown on the box and in all of the promotional photography. New Age Toys is aware of the issue and will be producing replacement heads which will be shipped out to dealers.

New Age Toys has released a statement (translated by NOCV on TFW2005) about a factory error with Riddick. The eyes were supposed to be red but some were painted blue and some black. They will be sending dealers properly painted replacement heads. On the plus side, now you can mix and match to give McCoy some color contrast if you got the blue-eyed version or make your own Zombie Ironhide with the black-eyed version.

  • New Age H2EX Martini Manero

    New Age H2EX Martini Manero

The hyper-detailed Martini Manero from New Age Toys has arrived at JunkionHQ!

    The Box

Originally announced as H2EX, Martini Manero’s packaging is labeled 02M. Like with G2 Manero, I’m sticking with the original numbering for this post and my unofficial catalog.

    The Conclusion

The Legendary Heroes line is occasionally referred to as “mini-Masterpieces” and, for me, this release fits that description perfectly. My perfect Masterpiece is an accurate real-world vehicle mode, like Diaclone, paired with a robot mode that strikes a balance between the cartoon and the original toy.

  • New Age H2V G2 Manero

    New Age H2V G2 Manero

The first of the new Maneros (Manerii?) has arrived at JunkionHQ!

    The Box

Originally announced as H2V, G2 Manero’s packaging is labeled 02G, which was already used for Capoeira. Because of this, I’m sticking with the original numbering for this post and my unofficial catalog.

    G2 Manero box
    G2 Manero box back

Inside the box, you find the expected Manero accessories as well as two of the missile launcher from Harry in G2-inspired blue and green.

    G2 Manero box contents

    The Robot

The first thing that you’ll notice about the robot mode is that it doesn’t look like the box art. On the box we can see the entire musical note from the hood on the robot’s chest. On the toy, we can only see the bottom of the note which is rather odd. I thought at first that they were trying to replicate the exact layout found on G2 Jazz, it’s further forward on the hood there, more like the box art.

    G2 Manero robot mode
    G2 Manero robot mode side
    G2 Manero robot mode back

I don’t think Harry’s missile launchers really work here since the hollow “bottom” is exposed when mounted on Manero’s shoulder. It also doesn’t look anything like the launcher that came with G1 toy or even the G1 version.

    G2 Manero robot mode launcher

    The Porsche

I’m still surprised that they included the “Jazz” details on the windshield and spoiler. I’m guessing that, since Hasbro no longer owns the trademark (they have to use “Autobot Jazz” now themselves), they felt safe enough. The result, however, is a fantastic and complete tribute to the G2 toy.

In robot mode the G2 version, paradoxically, comes off as pretty plain.

  • New Age H3B Kitt

    New Age H3B Kitt

Another day, another Datsun: New Age Toys’ Diaclone No. 7 Fairlady Z blue version inspired Kitt has arrived.

    The Box

Th box is very similar to Maverick‘s with a very strong 1970’s feel that replacing the racing flag pattern with a sea green background and removing the Ark Warrior badge. Unlike the rest of the Bluestreak-inspired releases which were numbered H4_, Kitt has been added to Harry‘s numbering scheme: H3B.

Like the rest of the Datsuns this includes the rifle and two of the same missile launchers that came with Harry for a more toy-inspired look.

No changes from Murphy except for the blue. I was a little concerned by some of the early photos of this figure that the shade of blue would be overwhelming but, in hand, it looks fine.

    New Age H2T Kagemusha

  • New Age H5B Alonzo

    New Age H5B Alonzo

Basic black is a great look for the Maverick mold!

    The Box

Alonzo’s box is inspired by the 2007 movie toy line packaging and includes a huge window on the front.

    Alonzo box

It is the first release in the line that was not given a function. Even Multiverse Cyclops was had a function of “Security Police”.

There’s also a movie-style bumblebee logo on the back

    Alonzo box back

In the box you get a rifle, two shoulder cannons and the same instruction sheet that came with Harry.

    Alonzo box contents

It is a little disappointing that they painted the weapons gold instead of just casting them in that color. The unpainted rifle handle really stands out and the extra paint makes the shoulder cannons extremely difficult to use.

    The Robot

The robot mode doesn’t have any changes from Maverick with the sole exception of having Harry’s roof.

However, ty_starr on TFW2005 had a thought that fits the pattern better, “Alonzo references the movie Training Day. Denzel Washington played a dirty cop named Alonzo.”

Although this is another oddball release like Cyclops I’m very glad they did it.

This will be the primary Bluestreak for my display as far as robot mode goes.
